Life In An RC

How is it different than a dorm?

  1. Masters & Fellows are faculty and staff at Northwestern who are affiliated with Willard.  We've got tons.  Sit and chat with them every week at "hightable" lunches, pursue research opportunities with them, go on special outings witht them and listen to them speak at faculty firesides.  Our masters and fellows will make your academic life at Northwestern richer, and they're just cool people!

  2. Points are units of awesomeness that are earned by being an active part of Willard.  For example, you can earn points going to and planning firesides, dancing on our DM team, playing IM sports, and countless other ways.  Points are what help you snag an awesome room if you wanna live in Willard as a sophomore- the more points you have, the earlier pick you have of your room.

  3. Also, they go towards the House Cup.  At the beginning of the year, every resident is assigned to a "house" (unfortunately no talking hat is involved at this time, but we're working on it).  Houses occasionally do social events together, and whichever house has the most points as a whole at the end of the year wins a cool prize- this year, it's a trip to a Second City show in Chicago!

  4. Firesides are opportunites for students, teachers, and outside speakers to share something that they know a lot about or are really interested with the Woo-Shack community. Our interesting firesides set Willard apart from other Res Colleges, especially with our high volume of student firesides. Whether it's about Ke$ha, Willard Folklore, or communism in Soviet Russia, firesides are an informal way to spend time with fellow Willardites and learn about some cool things you might not have known anything about.

  5. Community Events- Normal dorms have social events too, but it's pretty safe to say that they don't match up to Willard's.  Get all the details here.

  6. Philanthropy- Willard participates in lots of fundraising events for good causes, all year long.  Check it out:

  7. FALL--Along with skipping and ten-pin bowling, trick-or-treating is illegal in Evanston, so Northwestern puts on "Project Pumpkin," a fun and safe event for children. Each October 31st, Willardites dress up in their spookiest outfits and run their own Halloween booth. When Thanksgiving rolls around, we show our Woo Love by distributing food during what's called Turkey Taxi.

WINTER--Everyone around the shack knows that winter means Dance Marathon. With year-round canning opportunities, and the annual date auction, Willard is one of the most aggressive DM groups on campus....'Nuff Said.

SPRING--Willard springs into action with Relay for Life in May. After demonstrating their spirit at the all-nighter event, Willardites reward their hours of walking by watching the sunrise over Lake Michigan. Once they're ready to leave their beloved Woo-Shack for the year, Willardites donate the extra clothing and supplies they don't want to lug home to Supplies for Dreams, a nonprofit to benefit underprivileged schoolchildren.
